Tropical Cyclone Atmospheric Forcing for Ocean Response Models: Approaches and Issues

چکیده

The specification of tropical cyclone atmospheric forcing for ocean response models is described with emphasis on methods that are currently actively applied in basins rich in insitu, airborne and remotely sensed meteorological data. We emphasize approaches and critical issues addressed in more detail in this workshop’s special session on Tropical Meteorology. Five alternative wind fields developed for Gulf of Mexico Hurricane Katrina (2005) are applied with a third generation wave model to highlight the sensitivity of predictions of integrated properties of the wave spectrum to the wind fields, including a preliminary assessment of the sensitivity of inner core peak sea states to high frequency temporal changes in the wind forcing.

Sensitivity of South American summer rainfall to tropical Pacific Ocean SST anomalies

[1] A suite of idealised ensemble experiments are used to investigate the sensitivity of the Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation to the location of SST anomalies over the tropical Pacific Ocean. Of particular interest is the response of South American rainfall during austral summer. The experiments reveal an approximately opposite response in rainfall over South America when the tropica...

A statistical assessment of tropical cyclone activity in atmospheric general circulation models

The properties of tropical cyclones in three low-resolution atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs) in seven ocean basins are discussed. The models are forced by prescribed, observed sea surface temperatures over a period of 40 yr, and their simulations of tropical cyclone activity are compared with observations. The model cyclone characteristics considered include genesis position, numb...

Modeled sensitivity of upper thermocline properties to tropical cyclone winds and possible feedbacks on the Hadley circulation

sensitivity of upper thermocline properties to tropical cyclone winds and possible feedbacks on the Hadley circulation" (2010). [1] The sensitivity of upper thermocline properties, and global climate, to tropical cyclone (TC) winds is examined using global ocean and atmosphere general circulation models. We combine seven years of global, satellite‐based TC wind records with a standard surface w...

Air-sea interactions during the passage of a winter storm over the Gulf Stream: A three-dimensional coupled atmosphere-ocean model study

[1] A three-dimensional, regional coupled atmosphere-ocean model with full physics is developed to study air-sea interactions during winter storms off the U. S. east coast. Because of the scarcity of open ocean observations, models such as this offer valuable opportunities to investigate how oceanic forcing drives atmospheric circulation and vice versa. The study presented here considers condit...

Implementation of a Mesh Movement Scheme in a Multiply Nested Ocean Model and Its Application to Air–Sea Interaction Studies

A mesh movement scheme is implemented in a multiply nested primitive equation ocean model. Mesh movement can be specified or determined in the course of the model run so as to follow an evolving oceanic feature, such as a wave front or propagating eddy, or atmospheric forcing, such as a tropical cyclone. Mass, heat, and momentum are conserved during the movement. The mesh movement scheme is tes...
